Hello, friends.
The word "courage" is related to the French word for "heart," or "coeur"; this is where we get expressions such as "lion-hearted," or "take heart." In the center of your Self is the beating drum of your courage, which continues without ceasing for as long as you're alive.
When you're afraid and feeling desperate, despairing, or lonely, place your hand on your heart. Feel its stubborn persistence. Let your heartbeat act as a talisman, reminding you that you are brave and you are strong; for as long as your heart is with you, courage is never far as you face agony, pain, danger, uncertainty, or intimidation.
With every breath, call on courage. With every heartbeat, courage will call back.
What do you do when you need to feel courageous?
Thanks so much for this Esme. I'm thinking about the heart and courage as mine flutters and hiccups after periods of stress or bouts of anxiety. I'm also recalling how it pounds steadily when I'm swimming or doing something else that's strenuous. I notice my courage the most when I'm faced with a circumstance I need to respond to, then take time to look into myself and respond from that place (when I trust myself, as others here have already said). Practicing doing this over and over, through myriad emotions, helps me to be, if not always feel, courageous.
