I've just recently read your book, The Collected Schizophrenias Essays, and it was so good. At the risk of sounding not helpful, I just wanted to write to you to tell you how brave and strong you are. I wish I could afford to learn from you, but for now, I take comfort in knowing I can continue to read your words here, and maybe that'll be enough to at least learn how to be brave and strong in my writing too.
Thoughtful softies. Love it! Looking forward to the love letters and glad you’re finding a groove that speaks to you.
And to your question, right now, thoughtful softie describes me well. What it means to me is that these days tears often swell up in me—at all that is joyful, all that is awful, all that is hopeful and tender and nascent, all that is old and clinging to what serves only a few and all that is us tearing us asunder— that is to say, all that is human. It is both time of life as in mine, and as in our era that makes my well runneth over. And I am ever so grateful to find others contemplating all of this softly.
Good luck with the changed newsletter! It all seems positive to me. I'm a full-time softie and try to be thoughtful. I recall discovering the ice-cream brand Mr Softee as a kid on my first trip to London and thought of it as the height of cool sophisticaiton (though neither words were in my vocabulary). But I'm not sure if that is what I'm looking for any more. Perhaps warm (uplifting) honesty?
Is there anything you'd like to see me write about as part of The Unexpected Shape? Are YOU a thoughtful softie? What does that mean to you?
